By Racing Network TVN - 01/02/15 - The in-form stable of Peter Gelagotis produced another galloper of promise when Easy Grand ($3) won Sunday's opening race at Geelong, the GRC Function & Event Centre Maiden Plate (1500m).
Gelagotis won the first at Sale the previous Sunday with first-starter Mr Wonderful and achieved the same result with Easy Grand at just his second start.
The son of Randwick Guineas and Spring Champion winner Hotel Grand was bustled forward from the widest gate under Vlad Duric and sat second in running.
He put paid to leader Miss Magnifique at the top of the straight then narrowly held out the strong late challenge of the Max Hinton-trained Two Shillings ($9), an improver with the blinkers off.
The Nikki Burke-trained Breakneck ($21) also finished solidly for third.
After the race, Gelagotis told TVN's Shane Templeton that the on-pace tactics were unlikely to be repeated with Easy Grand.
"It probably wasn't ideal circumstances drawn out there," he said. "I said to Vlad ... it's not the way that I'd like to ride the horse, but just go forward, stay out of trouble, give him plenty of galloping room so that he can use his ability.
"Credit to Vlad. He just hung on but we won the race and that's the most important thing."
Duric described Easy Grand as "a lovely big, strong horse".
"He got a little bit lost when he got to the front so I think he's definitely going to be better suited chasing."
Out of the Canny Lad mare Shack, Easy Grand is a full brother to multiple stakes-placed two-year-old Metonymy, who ran fourth in a Blue Diamond.
Easy Grand cost $46,000 as a yearling and ran third on debut at Ballarat on January 18. He has earned $11,900 from his two starts.
